Going beyond your comfort zone is super hard. But I think I'm doing ok with it. In my new role as a supervisor I'm trying to get used to saying things that need to be said, doing things that need to be done and having tough conversations. I'm not sure that it's ever something that will come easy to me.
In a recent training seminar that I had, the instructor said that one of the most important qualities for supervisors to have is courage. You will never truly enjoy giving negative feedback or having difficult conversations, but you will succeed as long as you have the courage to start those tough conversations. So I guess that's what I'm working on. My courage. Even though most of the time I feel like this guy...
Oh my gosh, the transistion from being just a part of the team to supervisor can be so awkward! Its all about the balance between empathy and confidence. It will get easier in time :) And hopefully less uncomfortable!
ReplyDeleteI really love that you called it a "work in progress". I tend to give myself such a hard time when I fall of the wagon or lose my motivation when really I just need to realize that the change doesn't happen over night.
